Our school is loving the Olympics! And really, what’s not to love? The excitement, the thrill of competition, and the all cheering for our favourite athletes… I could go on and on! The staff at Joliette Elementary wanted to bring all of that energy into our school and with the help of an amazing parent volunteer, the students and staff of JES have a wonderful Olympic display that packs a punch! We are so fortunate to be able to look at each and every day during the Olympics. The Olympics bring the world together — and they are bringing JES together as well!
Our cafeteria area is blessed with large windows that overlook our playground area. These windows make it the perfect place in our school to display artwork – not only because it is large, but also because it is the one area in our school that everyone walks by at least once a day. If you want something to be seen, you put it there!
Thanks to a wonderful parent volunteer, the idea for the rings came to life. Made from thick cardboard, a lot of duct tape, plenty of heavy duty staples, and several pieces of coloured construction paper, the rings are now on prominent display for all to see. A little word of advice if you would like to try this at your school – the rings are VERY HEAVY had to be hung from chains in order to stay suspended!
Each class represents a country. My Grade 3’s are representing the United States and are keeping track of their athletes. Our students made the flags of the countries they are representing and added gold, silver, and bronze medals to be able to keep count of how many medals each county wins throughout the games.
We also sent a letter home asking our parents to send in pictures of their children participating in some kind of physical activity. These pictures are placed around and inside of the rings to showcase our students talents and commitment to being physically active. We have so many talented children in our school! It is amazing to see pictures of families enjoying skiing together, children learning to ride horses, judo athletes, rock climbing athletes, hockey players, figure skaters… and who knows? Based on the amount of students who love to go sliding in the winter, perhaps we have a few future lugers or skeleton competitors attending JES!
Do you have an Olympic display at your school? I would love to see it! Leave me a comment and/ or link in the comments section below!
Have a great day!
