Hip! Hip! Hurray! It’s that time again! The Weekly Summer Link-Up is here yet again! I am really excited for this one because there are so many wonderful, funny, and encouraging quotes out there. I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with.
And with that said, here is mine.
“You is smart. You is kind. You is important.”
This scene is from The Help, a movie based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Kathryn Stockett. Set in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962, this story follows the lives of 3 strong women who work for upper class families – raising their children, cleaning their homes, and most importantly, keeping their secrets.
In the scene above, you see Aibileen, the help, showing Mae Mobley, her charge, in a moment of pure love and affection; something that she does not receive from her mother, Miss Leefolt. Before this scene comes about in the movie or book, we learn that Miss Leefolt is not the warm and affectionate mother you would expect a first time mother to be. Mae Mobley does not live up her mother’s expectations when it comes to her appearance. Lacking looks and a skinny figure, Miss Leefolt’s dream of having a beauty queen for a daughter are (prematurely) shattered. Aibileen is the one who steps in to give Mae Mobley the love, attention, and affection that she is missing from her mother. She does such a good job of showering the young girl with love that Mae Mobley prefers the company of Aibileen over her mother.
As the movie/ book progresses, we learn that Aibileen and two of her friends come together with Skeeter, a well-to-do Southern socialite/ hippy at heart, to write a novel about the secrets they have kept hidden over the course of their lives as housekeepers. As the popularity of this book gains momentum and people start realizing the “characters” in the books resemble the townsfolk of Jackson, Aibileen is fired by Miss Leefolt – which leads to this gut wrenching scene.

Those three little sentences get me every time! I adore how Aibileen slowly built up Mae Mobley’s self worth over the course of their time together. Three simple sentences like the ones up above can mean the world of difference to a child. Every child does have a kind side to them. Every child is smart – although maybe not the “smart” that is celebrated in the school system. And every child is important.

Angela,
You HAVE to do both at some point this summer! Both are amazing. My one piece of advice is to have some kleenex nearby!
Thanks!

Welcome back Erin!
I love this quote so much that it is in a frame and is hanging in my classroom! I often have to explain to students and adults who haven’t read the book or seen the movie why the grammar is off… but after telling them story behind that particular quote, most people answer with an “Ahhh….”.
Thank you for coming and linking up once again! You have been a real blogging trooper!
