It’s almost time again – the time for all countries to come together in the spirit of sportsmanship, hard work, and perseverance. The time when people from around the world join together to celebrate the amazing athletic ability of a chosen few who are able to push themselves to achieve athletic glory. The Winter Olympics have always been my favourite and not because I love snow… I am a former figure skater and life-long fan of the sport and we all know there is no figure skating at the summer Olympics (although gymnastics is a really close second!)
I wanted to bring the Olympic spirit into my classroom so I decided to make a Language Arts package that concentrates on the three main branches of the Winter Games (Ice Events, Nordic Events, and Ski Events) and all the sports that are included in each. Without breaking trademark laws, your students can be immersed in the Olympics while reading, writing, and using their imaginations to learn about the sports that they will be hearing about and watching during the month of February.
Here is a little sneak peek of what is in my Competitive Winter Sports Literacy Activities Pack!
The pack includes a title page for the readers and activity sheets. These are perfect for duo-tangs, binders, and sheet protectors.
This 68 page resource has 1 reading passage per Olympic Winter sport as well as 1 writing/ art/ or game activity to go along with it. Here are the Biathlon pages to give you an idea of what to expect!
The unit also includes 3 anchor charts for you to use to show your students which sports belong to which category. The sports cards can be used for the anchor charts as well as for matching games.
Also included is “Which Sport Am I?” clue cards that can be used to track your students’ comprehension skills!
Are you worried about all the coloured ink in this package? Worry no more!
