The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has declared today, October 15th, as World Teacher Day. It is a day to not only recognize the hard work that teachers do on a daily basis, but to challenge teachers themselves to recognize just how significant their role is in the development of humans around the world.
“Empowering teachers, building sustainable societies” is the World Teachers’ Day slogan for 2015.
“We will ensure that teachers and educators are empowered, adequately recruited, well-trained, professionally qualified, motivated and supported within well-resourced, efficient and effectively governed systems. ... “
This quote is so true!
I am especially blessed to be able to teach in a small school. I have been teaching at JES for the past 13 years and within that time, I have seen the significant impact my colleagues and I have had on our students. I have witnessed many children entering kindergarten speaking only French and then have seen those same students, years later, graduate from Grade Six completely bilingual. I light up when I see a child who has cried everyday because she misses her mom come into the school with a smile on her face and no tears in her eyes. I burst with pride when a student who doesn’t like to participate in class discussions, raises his hand to answer a question. Watching these life experiences happen, seeing little children grow up, mature, venture out into the world, and graduate from high school & post secondary education is the reason why I love teaching as much as I do.
And on top of all that awesomeness, a student brings you an apple… and you realize that life just doesn’t get any sweeter!
Have a great day!
