Multiplication. Multiplication. Multiplication. It’s a concept that can truly be a nightmare for some. But how can we, as teachers, make it a little easier for our students to memorize their basic multiplication facts? Well, the answer to that is just a few YouTube videos away. Please allow me to explain.
I love searching YouTube for incredible teaching videos. There is an enormous amount of phenomenal tutorials on the site to help you with just about anything. Last year, thanks to YouTube, I found Mr. DeMaio’s wonderful songs for teaching children about multiplication tables. You can check them out by following the link below…
An Easier Way to “Memorize” Multiplication Facts
This week with my Grade 4 math students, we worked on multiples of numbers between 1 and 10. Since these children are my former students, they had already seen Mr. DeMaio’s videos with me last year – and they are fairly competent when it comes to their mastery of multiplication. Still, I have some who are still struggling to recall the multiples of higher numbers like 6, 7, 8, and 9 so I decided to do a quick research on YouTube to find something to help. Oh my goodness! Was I ever glad that I did! Not only did I find some strategies to help the ones having difficulty with the multiples of higher numbers, but these same strategies also challenged the students who have already memorized them. It’s a win-win situation!
The level of engagement with these videos was AMAZING! Even I was impressed by what I had learned by watching these! My students asked for the videos to be replayed time and time again so they could “catch” the “tricks” being explained. They wanted to master the concepts so that they could show their friends, parents, and older siblings how cool the strategies are.
Take a peek and see just how amazing these videos are!
1. Finding multiples of 3 – your students will need to know this strategy in order to complete the 6’s.
2. Finding Multiples of 6
3. Finding Multiples of 7
4. Finding Multiples of 8
5. Finding Multiples of 9
Aren’t these great?!?
Do you have a trick that can help students learn their multiplication tables? Let me know in the comments below!
Have a great day!
