The students and staff of JES tried something new this year. Through the careful planning of Miss Sophie and her Green Thumbs members, JES decided to combine Valentines Day and Winter Fun Day all in one — and instead of just having 1 day of fun, Miss Sophie and the Green Thumbs stretched all the fun throughout the entire week! I’ve nicknamed the week “Lovely Winter Fun Week” in honour of Miss Sophie!
The first activity that Grade 3 got to take part in was a school wide Valentine Card exchange. Following the opening ceremonies, Miss Sophie had every student reach into a hat on his or her way out and choose a name. Each student was responsible to create a Valentine’s Day card for their secret person. My students began making their cards in French class with Sophie and finished them in English class with me. All Valentine’s notes were bilingual and written with loving care. We had secret Valentines in every grade from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Here are some photos of my students working hard to prepare them!
Members of Green Thumbs came to pick up and deliver the cards on February 13th. We were so excited to see all the wonderful cards that we received from around the school!
The entire week was full of wonderful outdoor activities that were planned and supervised by the members of Green Thumbs. Students got to go sliding and dance around with the official Winter Fun Week Mascot! The whole school also got to participate in a Toque Decorating Contest and fashion parade.
Congratulations to Mélina for winning the best Toque for Grade 3!
Friday afternoon, the entire school got to go outside and enjoy the bright sunshine. The official JES DJ was back to play some great tunes for us (THANK YOU MR. JACK!!!), fire pits were installed to keep our hands and feet nice and warm (THANK YOU MR. ALARY & MR. KELLEY), and the official mascot from St-Charles-Borromée came out to help us with our winter celebration. After the outdoor activities were completed, everyone got to go inside to enjoy some very delicious hot chocolate and marshmallows. YUM!
A big thank you must be given to Miss Sophie and her Green Thumb members. These members, from Grade 4-6 thought up, planned, and carried out all the activities that happened during the week. A very special thanks also goes out to the Grade 6 students who dressed up as mascots throughout the week. Thanks to them, we had frogs, a squirrel, and even a chicken walking around to entertain the children this week!
Have a great day!
